The heretics
Only the Heretics advance the cause of science, in contrast to the Inquisitors and the upholders of orthodoxy stuck in their dogma. All the great discoveries, the scientific revolutions, were done by heretics. One of the finest qualities in these brilliant and courageous men and women is, without doubt, their ability to think independently, compared to their contemporaries, something which gives them the possibility of questioning established dogma and of developing theories which tally better with new observations. Instead of saying : « I don't understand, therefore it's impossible » whereever current theories cannot explain facts, they look for a new theory. The heretics have something else in common : they live with the deep conviction, despite and above all, that they are just that little bit closer to the truth. Whereas the orthodox, rather than questioning received theories, try instead to make the facts fit the dogma in a very personal interpretation of them ; or else they put it down to the work of the god Chance or to some Future which will inevitably supply an explanation albeit one which should accord with the present known state of things ( sleep in peace, we're watching over you... ). In the worst case, they simply ignore, discredit, dissimulate - without even taking the trouble of studying them, scared of the implications which go beyond their scope, all those impossible discoveries, some of which will be present in this site. In the different scientific fields, no important advance is made without suffering and schism. It is thanks to the courage and obstinacy of the great discoverers, in the face of the "scientific mass" ( the non-discoverers, certain teachers and others again resistant to change... ), that breakthroughs have been made and finally recognized, to be themselves installed as the new dogma. Scientists would do well to re-read from time to time the history of Science in order to keep alive in their memories the simple fact that, through all time, the improbable theories of yesterday often become the truths of tomorrow. In fact, even those who pride themselves on cold objectivity, the champions of rationality, very quickly turn into radical inquisitors, and since they have little in the way of arguments to fall back upon, engage in insult and denigration. As for those who have the temerity to interest themselves in such phenomena, what can we say ? They must have 'blown a fuse' ! Heretics are anathematised, excommunicated, little short of burning them at the stake, they are punished "universitarily" ; they are stripped of their dissertations, their grants, their laboratories and the committees sitting on the big scientific reviews effectively gag them by withholding publication. These actions, unworthy of a scientific ethic, are not always the fruit of dishonesty for even the most brilliant minds can be inhibited by the play of forces and an arkward conclusion may bring about a falsification in the very study of the phenomenon which leads to it ; moreover, « when you get it wrong, you look stupid » - be wary then, ignorance is bliss : one gives more importance to one's reputation than to upholding the truth. It is easier for scientists to ignore uncomfortable evidence and to go on in the established way than to build a new model based on the excepitons. The vast majority of scientists prefer to ignore those phenomena which pose a problem. Nonetheless, the true vocation of the scientist - is it not to possess a constant openness of mind so as to give birth to new hypotheses with regard to the study of facts in a rational manner ? That is, with that minimum of mental reservation ( those who claim to have none are liars ), rather than deny the evidence of fact and reject outright innovative areas of research simply because they risk overthrowing sacrosanct dogma or because they haven't a clue as to the methods of investigation needed in these impossible discoveries.
